Trust me, I know how tedious I can be

The other week I was talking to my housemates in our kitchen about some silly romantic situation I’d gotten myself into, asking them for advice, and then in a lull in the conversation, I said ‘if you’re ever listening to me tell my tales, and you start thinking that I’m tedious, just know that I’m fully aware that I am’.

We laughed.

For all my confidence in myself and security in many aspects of my personality, I know that I can really over-egg a point. I can talk for England once you’ve got me going and even though I try my very utmost to ensure that everything I say is of interest to the listener, I acknowledge that sometimes my energy levels can be too much even for some of the people closest to me. I try to monitor it and often I think that I give myself a much harder time about it than necessary, because I know that a lot of those close to me would describe me as a good listener as well as a good talker. But one thing I’ll always appreciate about my closest friends is that they know that sometimes I just need to go off on a monologue because if I don’t say my thoughts out loud, then they’ll spiral in my head and it’ll end in tears. Ugly tears.

But I don’t ever want to feel like a burden to other people – physically or emotionally – so in those moments when I do just feel like emotionally puking, I need to know that the person I speak to won’t judge me for it.

The type of ‘tedious’ monologues I’m talking about here is when you need to workshop your stresses about work, your PMS-induced intrusive thoughts, your anxiety about thinking you’re starting to like someone and not knowing how to play it, or when you just want to sit and reminisce about that time when you were 16 and your science lesson was hilarious. Basically, the times when you’re bored of sitting in your own mind, hearing your thoughts whizz around, and you need a human connection without conditions. However, trusting someone with this very personal and vulnerable part of yourself takes a lot because you can never really tell if they’re going to think less of you for showing them it.

For example, most of the people in my life who I’m closest to now are, and have always been, very different from me; bar maybe three, they’re all introverts who’d much prefer sitting on their own reading a book than having to engage in conversation with anyone. So I know that my (occasionally) highly strung expression of emotion can be exhausting for them and there have been times when I’ve felt guilty for that part of myself. But I do believe that supposedly ‘negative’ aspects of someone’s personality can have positive implications and my tendency to sometimes get myself overly worked up about things only happens because I care so deeply. Therefore, my most trusted friends and family members have never made me feel like I can’t open up to them when I need to – even though they miiiight have sometimes preferred the conversation to last 20 minutes less.

Then again, perhaps that last bit of the sentence was unnecessary self-deprecation. Knowing my lot, if they read this then I’m about to get some messages in capslock telling me to never think like that, because if I’ve gotta talk then they’re there to listen. I’d do the same for them, only everyone’s preferred type of support isn’t the same, so whilst my therapy is nattering, I know that some of my closest friends might just need me to sit next to them and be silly whilst we watch a movie. Regardless of the actions though, it’s about showing up for people in the way that they need and making it very clear that this is a no ! judgement ! zone ! because nobody should feel ashamed of venting when they need to vent.

I’ve been humbled this month, because it’s now painfully clear to me that I’m a lot of talk when it comes to romantic relationships and not a lot of walk. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been the girl who sits there and reels off the relationship advice to my friends when they’ve come to me with problems – not to mention the blogs I’ve written on the subject – without ever really knowing what I’m talking about. (But to be fair, I must be pretty decent at this agony aunt role, given that my friends keep asking me for help…)

Like most, I’ve had my fair share of mistreatment in romantic situations but I also haven’t reeeaally put myself fully out there since I was a teenager, so as much as I talk about this topic, I’m more of an observer in this world rather than an active participant. And I’ve cemented this as a part of my identity, by having a tendency to latch onto situations I know aren’t going to work, simply because the inevitability of it never really going anywhere means I don’t ever really have to put myself out there. So basically, I’m just really scared of falling in love, and the world of dating kind of freaks me out.

Honestly, I just find it strange that you’re meant to go to spend time with someone you barely know, present yourself to them, and then at the end of those few hours spent together, decide whether ‘there’s anything there’. And yes, I acknowledge that I do think about these things far too much and should just let it be, but you only have to watch one episode of First Dates to be reminded of just how stress-inducing this type of human interaction is. It’s as if the idea that this is the time when you should get to know a person sucks every ounce of relaxation out of the moment and just transforms it into one hundred and one ways to say something you’d probably never say if you were with your friends, but you’re saying it now because you’re across from someone who’s expecting to get to know you, but what do you actually mean when you ask me what my hobbies are? What even are my hobbies? Do I have hobbies? I swear I wasn’t this boring when I was texting my friend before I arrived here.

And breathe.

That paragraph probably made me seem more stressed about this kind of situation than I actually am, but the point I’m trying to make here is that it’s okay if you’ve been in these situations, where you’ve had this outer-body experience where it’s felt like you’re watching yourself act completely differently to how you know yourself to be. It’s likely because (as I mentioned in last week’s blog), you’re in a situation with a total stranger and it’s a lot to expect yourself to be completely open with them after knowing them for a matter of hours. Plus, dating is a skill which we only seem to gain with practice – I for one do not currently possess this skill. Can I flirt with someone in my general day to day if the feeling is right? Yes I can. Do I know how to apply that to a context which has been explicitly labelled as a date? No I do not. Does that makes any sense? No it does not. But we move! As the marines would say: improvise, adapt, overcome.

Short sidenote here as well: it’s a very British thing for us to not get excited about stuff we love, and to talk down our successes when we’re with other people. Don’t do that, you don’t need to do that. If you’re excited about something or you love it, then speak!! Passion about something is only ever going to be attractive and as a nation, we are poor at talking ourselves up because we don’t want to seem lame. So let’s try to not do that.

Dating is a truly foreign world to me, and falling in love high-key terrifies me. However, flirting is fun, dating is fun, and I’m sure falling in love is some of the most fun a person can possibly have. Therefore, to all my friends who’ve been trying to put themselves out there recently, I’d like to say that I completely understand the frustration of ‘how am I supposed to know if I like this person, when I’ve only spent a few hours with them?’.Nonetheless, my best friends have put me in check by instructing me to only focus on the moment, rather than always going for five steps ahead. Treat it like those flow chart quizzes we used to get in magazines when we were little: do you enjoy spending time with this person? If yes, follow that arrow to ‘see them again’ and if no, follow the arrow to ‘don’t see them again’, and take it from there.

We’ve all been hurt by someone at some point – possibly more than we’d first considered- but it’d be a shame to let that past hurt dictate how much fun you can have in the future. So, trust your instincts and if you make a mistake or if you come across something you don’t like, then hey, that’s helpful information too.

Now brb whilst I try to follow my own advice.

Every day, devastating things happen across the globe; some make the news for a few days, whilst others go completely unspoken of because public news stories only ever last as long as people’s attention spans – which, if you need clarification, isn’t very long. But at the minute, if you’re in Europe, then pretty much the only thing being shown by news channels is the Ukrainian-Russian War, and because I know that there’s no way of telling how long Ukraine will keep the attention of the continent, it only felt right that I say something on a platform where I know that some people will listen.

Right now, I’m being reminded of the extent of my privilege as a white, English, young woman because I’ve never known what it is to have friends or family in a country suffering persecution and war. But this time is different. I worked in Ukraine for 2 months in 2019, and for 3 weeks in the summer just gone, so whilst I may only know this country on a very small scale, it’s frightening to be texting friends who’re hearing bombs and hiding in metro stations when just 6 months ago we were sitting and laughing together, as they taught me Ukrainian and teased me about my accent.

The concept of invasion by a foreign power is not something many Brits have any understanding of, given that for centuries this nation was the threat and not the other way around; conveniently protected by oceans. This has largely meant that we can’t fathom what it would be like to live in a country where you’re never safe from invasion. We don’t really have the cultural capacity to imagine what it’s like to be told that you’re not what you thought you were, that the language you speak is no longer allowed, or that your home is now not the safest place to be. Hence, I can’t truly be an empath for my Ukrainian friends right now – no matter how much I might want to – but what I can do is draw as much attention to their voices as possible.

This isn’t a time to be passively ‘upset’ about what you’re seeing on the news, because as much as feeling sad or frightened is totally valid right now, my friends need more than that: they need something tangible.

So, listen to what the Ukrainian people are asking for and donate to their armed forces, go to a protest where you live, and keep talking about how blatantly wrong it is that these imperialist actions are still able to happen in the 21st century. Even if I couldn’t put faces and personalities to this crisis, what’s happening in Ukraine right now is an unforgivable violation of human rights, which should never have been allowed to go as far as it already has. This historical event isn’t unprecedented, and it isn’t something unique to Ukraine. But surely, this happening so close to home should emphasise how people need to actually learn from history, rather than ignore it and then hopelessly repeat it until we all kill each other.

My words don’t feel sufficient right now, but they’re the best I can give to help my friends. Thus, I hope for them, that the rest of the world pulls through and that this insanity can end soon so that they’re not robbed of anything else.

The vibes are immaculate

There are times when I come onto this site, and I feel pressured to write something with a serious, moral bottom-line. This can lead me to feel like I need to address some intense issue or some moral question, so that then in the moments when I feel really good, I end up thinking that I’ve got nothing to tell you.

Feeling this way probably stems from the fact that the act of writing or publishing something for people to read, comes with the added pressure of trying to ensure that whatever you say, is interesting for others. But this week, I don’t want to be analytical or complicated, I just want to show my housemates some appreciation because I love living in this house. Without meaning to sound like a total wet-wipe, I’m very aware of how lucky I am to live with 6 people who all make me feel so loved, safe, and valid. This isn’t a luxury everyone gets because the people you choose to live with, in your second year of university are often the first friends you made in a completely new place, and sometimes those friendships don’t end up being as fun as they first seemed. But if anything, the vibes in this house are so immaculate that we’ve become way closer friends than any of us ever were last year, and I want to make sure I give a little love to that.

So, this week, I’ll keep my point short and sweet: no matter how annoying or stressful life is, make sure that you take a second to recognise and appreciate the people in your life who make you feel good. Then once you’ve given them some love, you can go back to taking the piss out of them. Ah, the circle of life.

And if any Lavender kids are reading this – as I’m sure they are, since they’ll love the ego stroke of having a whole blog devoted to them – then big love to you, kids xxx

On Monday I had some really gratifying conversations with my group of friends. All the points we made and discussed, are points that I want to write about in future blogs but one in particular sparked this entry.

For a while I’ve been wanting to discuss what it’s like to be disabled in the dating world, but I’ve never really known how to articulate it. The truth is: I find it really unfortunate just how much it probably does affect how I’m perceived by boys, because it’s something about myself that I absolutely cannot control.

When my friend asked me whether I think my disability affects my dating life, my immediate answer was: yes, but I don’t think that anyone ever told me. My response may come as a surprise because as I’ve said before, I’m aware that once someone spends time with me, it’s very easy to forget that I’m disabled.

The thing is though, no matter how confident or independent or self-sufficient I am, I will always be disabled and will always have to live my life with certain adaptations for my health. When people get into a romantic relationship with someone, everyone has some preconceived idea about what it’s going to be like. These preconceptions come from all the popular culture and media we consume on a day to day basis – and have done for years. But very rarely does that popular culture include examples of relationships where one person is physically disabled and the other is not.

In the past year, I’ve gotten particularly impatient with my failed attempts at romance – as you’ve probably noticed hehe. Whenever one has failed, like most people I find myself looking for reassurance that sometimes it can work out. So I look around me, and at the media. But never ever ever ever do I see myself reflected in the relationships shown. I don’t often see couples on the street where one of the two is disabled. I definitely barely see it on Instagram. And I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen a famous person with a physically disabled partner walk a red carpet.

If I have seen a couple like this in the media or popular culture, it’s often felt tokenistic. By this I mean, in television programmes or Snapchat ‘Born Different’ stories it’s examples of severely disabled people and their partners. Whilst it’s (rightfully) always a celebration of those love stories, I still don’t feel represented or particularly comforted by them. And with that, the disability always seems to overwhelm everything else that makes that person attractive. Can you not be hot and disabled? Can that not be a thing too?

I don’t feel disabled enough to relate to those permanently in a wheelchair or with more severe illnesses than I. But then I’m still disabled, so I can’t fully relate to anyone who isn’t.

Since we don’t see examples of couples where one person is (not severely) physically disabled, subconsciously that plays a part in how we date. I’m not trying to say that it makes someone a bad person for not finding someone with a disability attractive, because that might not even play a part in how you feel about them. But then again, the intimidation which might come with how little you can relate to that part of someone’s life and the degree to which you feel prepared to try, might well shape your decision about dating someone.

Explaining what it’s like to be disabled to someone who has no idea, is an impossible task because no matter how hard they try, they just can’t access that type of human experience. So that’s obviously going to be intimidating when dating someone because you literally canNOT connect with them on such a huge level. And that might not be what you want. I totally get it.

In light of this, this blog is not meant to be a guilt-trip; I understand why people might do what they do – both consciously and subconsciously – when it comes to dating. Obviously I’d love to feel more represented, and to feel that my disability 100% doesn’t affect my dating life, but I can’t change the world overnight with my ramblings.

What is important, is that you know that just because someone has an issue that you know nothing about, that that doesn’t then mean that you would be useless at helping them with it. Disability needs to be more visible and in all honesty, we need to see more relationships in the public eye where a disabled person has an ‘able’ partner.

The day I see someone ridiculously famous walk a red carpet hand in hand with their physically disabled boyfriend/girlfriend, I think I might actually shed a tear.

Thankfully this week was a lot nicer, and a lot less stressful than the last.

My last blog was obviously a huge rant, but it might surprise you to know that after writing it, the situation didn’t bother me much. Instances such as the one with that delightful traffic warden aren’t that big of a deal for me because they kind of happen all the time. That being said, it’s never a highlight.

I’m pretty sure that the main contributor to my terrible week was just being ill, and it’s only when the illness leaves that you can realise just how much being full of cold can mess with your state of mind. Already feeling run-down, I was just overwhelmed by everything piling on top of me.

For years now I’ve been so excited about going to University and what it would bring to my life. Plus, I’ve always been pretty independent and self-sufficient so I thought that I would be absolutely fine once I actually moved. And all in all, I am absolutely fine and love it. But I do think that there’s a lot to be said for just how difficult starting University really is.

Not only have I moved to a totally new place, but I’m experiencing so many more pressures than I could have ever envisaged. One of the most stress-inducing being the academic pressures of my course. I mean I’m taking a degree in a language that I’ve never had any exposure to, and I really really struggle with not being good at something. First world problems, I know.

I’ve been telling myself that I’m really bad at Japanese when I stumble over translation or spontaneous speech, and have already cried in frustration at least a handful of times. But in these moments all I’m thinking about is why I can’t remember everything straight away, and I really beat myself up about it. But Japanese isn’t like French, and I need to fully accept that I’m not going to get it straight away, because on a base level: it’s just proper difficult.

I like to think that I’m a pretty self-aware person, so whenever I’m having these explosions of stress and exhaustion I know exactly what to attribute it to. I know when I’m tired, or stressed, or upset about some boy, or am emotionally volatile because I’m ill or on my period, or am missing home. I know that I work really hard, and that it’s okay for me to not understand everything straight away. But no matter how self-aware I am about why I’m being a cry baby, I also know just how stubborn I am.

It’s obvious that I need to not beat myself up about things, but it’s also really clear to me that I always will: I’m just wired that way. People talk a lot about bettering themselves in some sort of self-care scheme, and those schemes are clearly very worthwhile in many instances. But I also think that people should probably talk a little bit more about the parts of themselves that they don’t necessarily like, know aren’t good for them, but know are parts that they could never get rid of.

If I removed my strive for perfection and work ethic, then I just wouldn’t work as hard. And yes, sometimes I wouldn’t be as exhausted or as emotionally wound-up, but I’d also be bored out of my mind because I wouldn’t be doing anything. You can’t really have one without the other.

Plus, this intense part of my personality doesn’t just pop up when I’m in academic settings, it rears its head in my relationships with people. I just care a lot about everything.

I try really hard to always be kind and loving to those around me. Yes, sometimes it ends in unfortunate emotions, but most of the time it helps me to be surrounded by incredible people. And luckily, some of those people are there for the times when I get overwhelmed and just need someone to rant to, give me a big hug and tell me to stop being dumb. *shout-out for Richard last week, thanks buddy xo*

This weekend I’m spending my time back in beautiful Bradford for a couple of days, so naturally I thought it the perfect opportunity to write about my new University friends without having to awkwardly look at them whilst I describe them…so here you go squad.

On my very first day at Durham University, I met about half of the people I now call some of my closest friends and after the necessary small talk, we moved onto the hard-hitting stuff and discussed the wonderful world of hummus for (at least) 40 minutes. The traditional way to kick-start long-lasting friendships.

Meeting new people is always very challenging, seeing as you often have to try and decide which version of yourself you’re going to show for the first few days. You have to tip-toe around each other when it comes to humour, since you don’t want to offend someone or come across as unkind when all you’re trying to do is make everyone laugh. THEN, you also can’t really show anyone the moments when you’re tired or upset, seeing as you don’t want to come across as a downer, or boring to be around. So all in all, the first few days of University are kind of emotionally exhausting. But in the midst of all that internal stress, I was lucky to get to know some of the sweetest, funniest and most interesting people I’ve ever met in my life.

One of my favourite things about my new friends is that they come from all over the world, and have had such different life experiences to my own. Some spent their adolescence growing up in London, others in Scotland, one in Kenya and some even had the tough, tough time of having to grow up in the Midlands. It must have been rough guys, I can’t even begin to imagine…

JOKING! love you, can’t wait for some more Yorkshire jokes when I get back 🙂 xox

Moving to University is a really challenging moment in a young person’s life. We’re thrown into a completely new environment, with people we don’t know and who don’t know us, causing us to be on our best behaviour at all times – and there’s no guarantee that you’ll find people you feel really comfortable with at the end of all that. Lucky for me, I’ve found people I hope to be friends with for a very long time. I’ve struggled with missing home and being overwhelmed by my workload at points, but after having managed to surround myself with good people who make me feel relaxed, loved and safe at all times, getting through those moments has been easier.

So for anyone who’s struggling at University, or is about to go and is nervous, my advice to you is to find some people that you truly like and stick with them. A very very important element of doing that though is to also be yourself around those people; let them realise how much they like you too. It’s easy sometimes to hang out with people just because you think that they’re the ‘right’ people to associate with, but honestly there’s no point wasting your time like that, so try not to do it. If your relationship with someone doesn’t make you feel great most of the time, then ditch it. I’ve found that if you surround yourself with people whose company you genuinely really enjoy, life is that little bit more exciting. It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised by the amount of people who stick in friendships they don’t even really like to begin with. Don’t be that guy: find some buddies you love as much as I love mine.
